Itinerary

Day 1: To Massachusetts
Fly to Boston’s Logan Airport with accommodations for two nights at the Hilton Inn in suburban Woburn, Massachusetts.
 
Day 2: Welcome to Boston
This is your day to see the sights of Boston—the Back Bay, Beacon Hill, the Old State House where the Declaration of Independence was signed, and even Harvard University.  Lunch-time will find you at Quincy Market with 100 shops and artisans offering you treasures to take home. Pause this afternoon at the beautiful Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum before dinner at a local restaurant. (B, D)

 

Day 3: Kennebunkport
Board the Amtrak Downeaster Train for Maine.  After arrival, take a narrated driving tour of Kennebunk and Kennebunkport as well as a ride into yesteryear at the Seashore Trolley Museum. Then,   expect a Welcome Reception at the Hampton Inn Wells with a short drive to dinner at the Old Village Inn in Ogunquit, Maine. (B, D)

 

Day 4: Portland, Maine
Meet your local guide for a narrated tour of Portland, Maine’s largest city-by-the sea. A photo stop will be made at the Portland Head Lighthouse, the most photographed lighthouse in America. Lunch is included in the heart of Portland’s historic waterfront with an afternoon ride on the Maine Narrow-gauge Railroad along the Portland harbor which overlooks the Calendar Islands. Return to the Hampton Inn for a second night. A classic Downeast Lobster Bake with singalong entertainment is in store this evening. (B, L, D)

 

Day 5: Vermont
Board the “Notch” Train of the Conway Scenic Railway for some of the most spectacular scenery in the East. You’ll travel through Crawford Notch past steep ravines, cascading streams, and panoramic mountain vistas on the way to the Crawford and Fabyan Stations. A box lunch is included on the train. After detraining, visit Fadden’s General Store, family-owned since 1896. Take a tour of the Maple Sugar House, try a maple sample, visit the Maple Museum, and shop in the General Store. Then, check into your New Hampshire Hotel, the Mountain Club on Loon Resort for two nights.  A buffet dinner in included this evening at the hotel. (B, L,D)

 

Day 6: Lake Winnepesaukee & Loon Mountain
Meet your local guide and depart for Lake Winnipesaukee for a cruise on the M/S Mount Washington. Disembark at the delightful lakeside resort town of Wolfboro with free time for lunch and shopping.  Afternoon visit to the Wright Museum, showcasing remembrances of World War II. Board the Café Lafayette Dinner Train and relive the romance of dining on the rails in beautifully restored Pullman dining cars while enjoying five courses of fine food. After sunset, return to the Mountain Club on Loon. (B, D)
 
Day 7: The Berkshires
Travel today through Vermont to the Berkshires. Lunch is planned today at the Publyk House in Bennington. Afternoon visit to Hemmings Automobilia to see the collection of vintage automobiles.  Later, stop at the Bennington apple orchard and barn for a treat of apple pie ala mode. Arrive for a two-night stay at the Fairfield Inn and Suites in Great Barrington, Massachusetts. (B, L)

 

Day 8: The Berkshires
Visit the Norman Rockwell Museum in Stockbridge and see many of his original oil paintings. Free time and lunch on your own in the picture-book town of Stockbridge where Rockwell lived and worked. Afternoon touring over some of the most scenic backroads where the Berkshires are alive with fall foliage color. You’ll also see Tanglewood, summer home of the Boston Symphony, and the Berkshire “cottages” of Andrew Carnegie and the Vanderbilts. Dinner is included at the Apple Tree Inn. (B, D)

 

Day 9: Fly Home 
Morning tour of the Mount, which was the home of Edith Wharton, the first woman to receive the Pulitzer Prize. Then, we’re off to Logan airport with box lunches to eat along the way. (L)
