Day 1: Solvang
Begin our exploration of California’s most unique treasures by motorcoaching our way to Solvang, a wonderful little Dutch village, originally settled by families from the Netherlands. We’ll overnight at the Corque Hotel with a Welcome Dinner included. (B, D)
Day 2: Missions of the Royal Road
The Missions along the Royal Road represent the most dynamic part of California’s past. We’ll stop at the San Miguel Arcangel Mission where the Indians painted the walls and ceilings with ornate designs that still exist today; also, the San Antonio de Padua Mission, perhaps the most picturesque of all because of the bell tower and archway bells; and finally, the Nuestra Senora de la Soledad, certainly the most isolated mission of them all, but with a reputation for its hospitality.  We’ll check in to the Hilton in Scotts Valley for a three-night stay. (B)
Day 3: Filoli Mansion & Winchester Mystery House
Morning visit to the historic Filoli Mansion and gardens, which are lovely this time of year.  Make an afternoon visit to the Winchester Mystery House in San Jose.  After the death of her husband, who manufactured the Winchester rifle, Mrs. Winchester atoned for his profession by turning a two-room farmhouse into a 160-room mansion. You’ll find doors that open to blank walls, windows built into the floor, and dark stairs leading to ceilings. This crazy patchwork of a mansion tour is an indelible experience, but if you feel you can’t handle all the walking, just ask us to sign you up for the sit-down video tour, and we’ll meet you in an hour or so to travel back to our Scotts Valley hotel. (B)
Day 4: Calistoga
Today’s sightseeing will take us north of San Francisco to Calistoga for a look inside a replica of a 13th century Tuscan castle, the pet project of the owner of the Sattui Winery involving many years and many dollars. Most of the castle is elaborately furnished, and you will particularly like the Great Hall and even the torture chamber. Some steps are involved, but worth the effort. Wine-tasting will ease the journey back to our hotel. (B)
Day 5: Redwoods & San Luis Obispo
Pack up this morning for a visit to the nearby Henry Cowell Redwoods, the greatest treasure of them all. Then, head back toward Southern California. We’ll plan to overnight in San Luis Obispo with a Farewell Dinner this evening. (B, D)
